My Experience At The Comic Book Convention
It is that time of year again, time for the annual comic book convention. In this day and age, some have begun to call it the graphic novels convention. Which ever way it is phrased comic book conventions tend to gather people from all social stratas. The ages also vary, however, an average age of an attendee can be placed at around thirty years of age.
The style of comics that are presented for sale or display can vary tremendously. The common type of comic book one thinks of is the super hero comic. However, there are also more sinister and darker stories told with pictures. A graphic novel, such as it is called, means a novel told with graphics or pictures. This does not necessarily imply adult themed or erotic comics.
The convention presenters have different options when it comes to their display. Some artists use enlarged photo images which are copies of their work to show off their artistry. Others might actually allow certain attendees to peruse later editions of their prized collection. Technology also has its place here. For instance, many use LED backlight screens to provide a more enhanced color experience.
The convention also brings together an entertainment aspect. For instance, many larger publishers would hire and arrange for a person to dress up as one their major characters. The person would then walk about the floor to engage and garner the attention of the attendees. Obviously, there are many ways to grab people’s attention. In general, most of the story lines that sell involve some type of violence and a sexy heroine or woman in distress. This is a bit clich’, but true.
One particular artist invited a band to play the theme song of its hero. The band had a drummer, singer, and a takamine acoustic guitar player. There were dancers on both sides and his booth became one of the featured attractions. The artist, hopefully, was able to generate more sales. The cost of presenting at a convention can be prohibitive.
As an attendee, one can only expect to have fun and, perhaps, even find inspiration. The stories usually have some good triumphing over evil sub plot. However, there are some plots that can be more diabolical or sinister, even bordering on the fetish. Others can be more light hearted and even have a soap opera feel. The intense novels tend to be a bit more intense with gore and nudity. Many of the recent publishers have story lines that are more contemporary rather then taking place in the distant future or past.
My experience as a comic book convention attendee was definitely unique. The talents of the artists and the newer publishers are quite extraordinary. However, from my understanding, becoming a well known artist or publisher can be quite a challenge. To be successful, one needs a great plot, an identifiable character, and an artistic flair. Competition amongst artists is generally fierce.
